Midlife is a time that often brings abundant change, in many facets of life. Managing or changing careers, raising or sending kids out into the world, caring for or losing aging parents - there are many natural transitions taking place.
The menopause transition is often presented as one of the most challenging changes for women during this period of time.
But, here’s the thing:
Menopause and Midlife can present both obstacles AND opportunities.
With times of change often comes discomfort. But it also brings opportunities for reshaping and realigning.
The Menopause Transition
The full menopause transition is the entirety of the time that a woman is experiencing hormonal shifts and/or symptoms related to the physiological changes of menopause.
Overall, the symptoms of the menopause transition can span across upwards of 20 years.
Many women start experiencing perimenopause symptoms in their late 30’s; others may have post-menopause symptoms that last into their 60’s.
PERIMENOPAUSE
This time period marks the beginning of the menopause transition.
Symptoms in this phase can start up to 10 years prior to menopause.
Hormones start fluctuating downward, creating unpredictable symptom experiences for many women.
MENOPAUSE
This is a specific time, marked by the final menstrual period.
It is confirmed after a woman has gone 12 months without a menstrual cycle.
The median age of confirmed menopause is 48-52.
POST-MENOPAUSE
This is the entire period of time after menopause until the end of life.
Symptoms can linger for up to 10 years after menopause is confirmed.
Let’s be clear, you can’t “out fitness” menopause.
It’s a natural, inevitable transition as a woman.
You CAN, however, learn and practice sustainable habits that make the experience of this transitional time as smooth as possible for you.
By drawing your attention to what you CAN control, fostering a growth mindset to embrace challenges as they arise, and facing changes with the confidence that you can manage them, you can flip the script on how midlife experience is typically viewed.
